The Black Series launched in 2013 as Hasbro's premium 6-inch line — the first retail wave (Aug 1, 2013) was Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot, Darth Maul, R2-D2, and a Sandtrooper, in the now-nostalgic orange-accent packaging. It is the modern collector standard: numbered, phased, and chased. Early orange-line figures and short-packed waves carry the premium; the first figure collectors actually got was a Boba Fett + Han-in-Carbonite SDCC exclusive that sold out fast.

The Vintage Collection (TVC) is the 3.75-inch collector line on classic Kenner-style cardbacks. It first ran 2010–2012 ("VC 1.0"), then relaunched in 2018 ("VC 2.0") and has run since. Collectors favor it for two reasons: it stays cheaper than the 6-inch Black Series, and the 3.75-inch sculpts often rival or beat the 6-inch figures on paint detail — plus the scale works with the vintage vehicles and playsets for world-building.

The original Kenner line (1977–1985) created the 3.75-inch small-scale format that became the industry standard — the same format Hasbro later revived for G.I. Joe. This is the vintage prestige tier, and it holds the grails: the rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype (a graded example sold for $1.34 million; Kenner glued the rocket over safety fears, so only a handful exist) and the vinyl-cape Jawa on a 12-back card (AFA 80+ examples reach $30,000–$45,000). Both are current Hasbro lines, so it is a format choice, not a quality one. The Black Series (launched 2013) is the 6-inch, super-articulated, display-piece standard. The Vintage Collection is the 3.75-inch line on Kenner-style cardbacks — cheaper, often more finely painted for its size, and built to scale with the vintage vehicles and playsets. World-builders lean Vintage Collection; shelf-display collectors lean Black Series.
How do I tell a vintage Kenner figure is real and what drives its value?
Vintage Kenner ran 1977-1985 at 3.75 inches. Value is driven by the cardback (the '12-back' first-run cards are the most prized), condition, the AFA grade for carded examples, and specific production variants — the vinyl-cape Jawa, the double-telescoping lightsaber early figures, and the collector-coin Power of the Force releases. Loose and incomplete drops value a tier; a graded carded 12-back is the ceiling.
What is the Light side vs Dark side split on this hub?

The Star Wars figure story
Hasbro launched Star Wars Black Series in 2013 with an orange-carded 6-inch figure and a lot of goodwill from collectors who had been tolerating the 3.75-inch scale since 1977. Thirteen years later it is the dominant premium Star Wars format: 838 figures in the FigurePinner database, 537 unique characters, and a secondary market that ranges from $8 clearance Stormtroopers to $200+ HasLab Sail Barge figures that funded on sheer collector will.
The line has gone through distinct phases that collectors track like geological strata. Orange wave, blue wave, Force Awakens era, 40th Anniversary, Galaxy series. Each phase has different articulation standards, paint quality benchmarks, and secondary market behavior. Buying a Phase 1 orange-carded figure and a current Galaxy-series release is not the same transaction even if they cost the same at retail.
