A cyborg soldier from a dystopian future who predated the Terminator by nearly a decade and helped define Marvel's science fiction horror niche. Deathlok first appeared in Astonishing Tales #25 in 1974, created by Rich Buckler. The original was Luther Manning, a soldier who was killed and reanimated as a cyborg killing machine in the apocalyptic future of 1990. His divided consciousness — fighting for control of his own body against his built-in programming — was psychologically complex for its era. Multiple subsequent versions followed: Michael Collins in 1990 was a pacifist computer programmer horrified to find himself inside a Deathlok body. The Marvel Cinematic Universe adapted the concept for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Deathlok figures span multiple eras and character variants across Marvel's collector line.
