Giant Machine makes his WWF debut on television taped August 5, 1986 and aired August 23, following manager Bobby Heenan's angle that saw Andre the Giant kayfabe-suspended by WWF President Jack Tunney for no-showing an April 26 tag match against King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd. Masked as one of The Machines, a stable billed as mystery imports from Japan, Andre works the segment while Heenan tries to photograph him ringside to expose his true identity. Behind the mask, the gimmick let Andre juggle a Japan tour, chronic back problems, and filming The Princess Bride.
