One of Marvel's oldest characters and its first true anti-hero. Namor first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in October 1939, created by Bill Everett — making him older than Captain America, the Human Torch, and almost every other Marvel figure. The son of a human sea captain and an Atlantean princess, Namor is the Prince of Atlantis and one of the most powerful beings on Earth. Despite his immense strength, speed, and underwater dominance, he has famously small wings on his ankles that allow him to fly — a detail played for irony for decades. A founding member of the WWII-era Invaders alongside Captain America and the original Human Torch, Namor has oscillated between hero and villain throughout his existence, allying with whoever suits his agenda of protecting Atlantis. In modern continuity he is also identified as a mutant, the first of his kind.
