The Red Hulk debuted in Hulk #1 (2008), written by Jeph Loeb with art by Ed McGuinness. The character's identity was kept secret for months — a major Marvel mystery — before being revealed as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, Bruce Banner's longtime nemesis. Red Hulk generates intense heat rather than gamma radiation when enraged. Ross eventually reformed and served with the Thunderbolts and S.H.I.E.L.D.
