A self-taught engineer who built his own supervillain gear and became one of Spider-Man's more nuanced allies. Hobie Brown first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #78 in 1969, created by Stan Lee and John Buscema. A window washer who invented wrist gauntlets firing compressed air and gas pellets, Hobie debuted attempting robbery as the Prowler before Peter Parker talked him into going straight. He went on to help Spider-Man multiple times, including impersonating him when Peter needed an alibi — one of the earliest examples of the identity shell game that defines Spider-Man's world. His mechanical suit is entirely human-crafted with no superpowers, making him a working-class hero in a world of gods. The Miles Morales Universe version of Prowler — Aaron Davis, Miles's uncle — gained renewed prominence through the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse franchise.
