C-3PO shows up in The Force Awakens with a detail longtime fans clocked immediately: a mismatched red left arm swapped in for his usual gold. The film never explains it. The answer came later in Marvel's one-shot Star Wars Special: C-3PO, where the droid loses his own arm during a Resistance mission gone wrong on Taul and takes the red arm from Omri, a First Order droid who sacrificed himself to save him. C-3PO keeps it as a memorial.

C-3PO's gold deco and relatively static pose in early Kenner figures made him one of the more display-oriented vintage Star Wars pieces — the 12-back C-3PO is among the most recognized early Kenner cardbacks; the removable limbs play feature in the Empire Strikes Back-era figure was an unusual mechanical innovation, and the Black Series gold chrome C-3PO releases have been among the more technically challenging modern Star Wars figures to produce.
