R5-D4 reuses Kenner's astromech body tooling repainted red and white, first released in 1978 on the Star Wars 20-back Series 2 assortment that expanded the original twelve-figure line to twenty. It depicts the 'faulty' droid Owen Lars inspects and rejects at the Lars homestead droid auction before buying R2-D2 instead. An early-production run used leftover 1977-dated torso molds before Kenner updated the stamped copyright date.
